AR en VR in museums
Application of Augmented and Virtual Reality in museums
Nowadays, there are more and more alternatives for leisure activities. As a museum, you therefore need to be distinctive to attract the attention of potential visitors. The most visited museums no longer present their collections in the traditional way. They offer visitors an interactive experience. One of the ways museums can innovate is by using augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technology. Museums can apply the technology to offer a unique experience while combining education.

Unique information and education
An interactive experience with augmented reality
AR allows museums to enrich their objects and exhibits by adding digital information, such as videos, audio, 3D models or other multimedia. This allows visitors to delve deeper and learn more about the objects on display. AR can also be used to create interactive games and quizzes, allowing visitors to learn about the museum in a fun way.
AR can also be used to enrich guided tours. For example, visitors can download an app that gives them more information about the objects or rooms they pass during the tour. For ANNO, we developed an augmented reality experience. The aim was to bring the museum to life and offer a unique experience. Watch the video below for the AR Experience.
Enter a different world with virtual reality
Virtual Reality (VR) is a technology that allows users to have a unique experience in a virtual environment. Through VR glasses, they enter another world or time. In a museum context, VR can be used to provide visitors with a unique and memorable experience. This allows museums, for example, to simulate historical events, give virtual tours of distant countries or cultures, or display objects and artworks that would not otherwise be on display.
VR technology in a museum can also be used for educational purposes. For example, museums can create VR environments in which visitors learn about specific topics in an interactive way. This allows visitors to gain knowledge in an interesting and fun way and also remember it better. For Geert Groote Huis museum, we created a 3D reconstruction of the situation around the year 1500, based on archaeological research. In this VR Experience, visitors are introduced to the living environment of Geert Groote’s followers: the Brothers of Common Life. This was the situation in which the followers of the Modern Devotion lived in Deventer.
The benefits of AR and VR for museums
The benefits of using AR and VR in museums are numerous. For example, museums can:
- Provide a unique and educational information service: Offer information in a different and more interactive way that makes visitors understand and remember the material better.
- Attract more (young) visitors: Making the tour attractive creates a unique and interactive experience for young and old.
- Offer a personalised visit: Visitors have the opportunity to choose their own route and content.
- Renewal for returning visitors: It is possible to renew the AR or VR content, making it interesting to visit the museum again.
- Link to a CMS: The AR or VR solution can be linked to a CMS allowing the content to be updated or renewed. As a museum, you are therefore in control.
