Augmented Reality at museums
Create a unique experience
By adding augmented reality-related content to a museum, you have the opportunity to make the experience unique and personalised. AR adds an extra dimension to the museum making it really come alive. The technology offers various interactive solutions to appeal to different audiences and create engagement. The standard, walking around and looking, is complemented by digital elements where museums have the opportunity to bring exhibitions to life. The story surrounding an exhibition or object can be explained through the use of augmented reality. The technology is easy for visitors to use. Nowadays, every smartphone offers the possibility to visualise AR. For ANNO Museum, we developed a unique AR Experience that really brings the museum to life. Watch the video below.
With augmented reality, you can…
1. Provide unique information
It is common to use an audio tour or pillars of information to explain the story around an exhibition. By deploying AR content, you can tell the story in a unique way. For instance, you can visualise digital elements over the real artwork. The digital elements offer information about the particular artwork or a space. This information can be visualised with augmented reality. In this way, you offer visitors the opportunity to delve further into a particular work of art or a space in the museum.
2. Creating a new experience
Augmented reality allows you to visualise digital elements over reality. This way, you can let visitors relive historical events. For example, show how a city district has changed over time. But you can also highlight ‘hidden’ details in a painting.
3. Offering a personalised visit
AR encourages people to participate during their visit. Offer visitors the opportunity to plan their own tour based on interests. But you can also offer the younger target group more interaction using small games. In this way, you offer personalised visits to different target groups.
4. Attracting more (young) visitors
It is increasingly difficult for museums to attract the younger generation. By betting on AR, you attract people to visit museums. You offer young people a unique learning experience. Especially for schools, it becomes interesting because it then feels less like an obligation for the students.
5. Refresh faster with updates
For ANNO, we had the opportunity to develop an augmented reality experience. The aim was to bring the museum to life and offer visitors a unique experience. Users can use an iPad to access information in a unique way. There is a QR code in every room of the museum. After scanning the code, a person in the room is visualised telling the story. Watch the video below for the AR Experience.
What do you need to consider?
It is important to consider a number of practical issues when deploying augmented reality. First, the technology must be relevant to visitors, therefore it must also be meaningful. Thus, AR content should reinforce the story surrounding the exhibition or object’s current situation. In addition, it should be accessible to everyone. Therefore, offer tablets that allow every visitor to use the technology. Finally, it is important to provide space for the digital elements to be projected. For instance, it does not make sense to visualise a 3-metre-long digital element in a 2-metre space. Would you like to know more about the possibilities of AR in museums?
