For Straathof Controls we have linked an existing operating system of a boat to a virtual world. Users can use a real operating system to control the virtual boat.
Straathof Controls
Straathof is a company that designs and installs propulsion control systems for yachts, sailing ships and commercial marine vessels. For Straathof, Virtual Reality is a good way of approaching the experience of operating a ship with a joystick. That is why we developed an application for them that is used, among other things, for demonstration at trade fairs or for training.
Hardware linking with VR
For this VR application, a link has been made with Straathof’s existing operating system. This system converts input from the joystick into values that control the engines, bow thruster and rudder of the ship. Total Reality has developed a module that reads the values directly from the hardware and converts them into usable control data for the Virtual Reality simulation. In this way, the client can experience what it is like to sail with a system from Straathof.
