Serious game
“Ontwerp je klimaatschoolplein”is a serious game with which children can design their own 3D climate schoolyard. We developed this online platform in collaboration with Tauw.
Environmental school yard
Tauw is a consultancy and engineering firm with a strong position in environmental advice and the sustainable development of the living environment. For Tauw we have developed a game in which climate school playgrounds can be designed by children. A climate schoolyard is a schoolyard in which the climate is considered. There is much more nature and sustainable applications have been made.
Serious game
The serious game has 3D graphics and is built in a web environment. There is an input and design portal. The real world forms the basis for the game, the school building and the schoolyard can be acessed by the teacher. The teacher can also drag existing elements such as trees onto the yard. On the basis of questions the climate ambition is determined. It is then up to the pupils to further design their school yard.
The serious game consists of two parts:

– The design tool
The input portal
By zooming in on the right location, the teacher can traverse the shape of the school building and the square. Existing trees can also be dragged to the square. By answering questions, the climate ambition is determined.
The design tool
The student receives a link (in the web browser) that opens his or her school environment with the corresponding climate task, so that it can be set up.
Preconditions that play a role in reality are built into the game, without restricting the creativity of the children. Think, for example, of the right substrate under a play object and various climate challenges.
Who’s the game for?
The game is intended for all organizations that want to realize a green schoolyard and want to involve children in the design process. These can be governments, but also school boards, real estate developers, gardeners or (landscape) designers.
The game connects seamlessly with children’s experiences and their ability to express ideas in a fun and interactive way. An additional advantage is that they become aware of how to deal with the consequences of climate change.
Audience Award “De Vernufteling”
Together with Tauw we have won the Audience Award of Ingenuity for this online serious game.
“De Vernufteling” is awarded annually to the consultancy or engineering bureau that submits the most inventive project. “Koninklijke NLingenieurs” and the magazine “De Ingenieur” organise “De Vernufteling”.
